The brand was created in 2004 and is best known for producing Lodi Zinfandel vines aged 35 to 80 years. The brand belongs to Delicato Family Vineyards. The majority of Gnarly Head's wine portfolio is California table wine from appellations such as Lodi, Monterey and North Coast. These wines are made from several popular grape varieties, including Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. Several reds are featured on the label, including Authentic Red, Authentic Black, 1924 Double Black and Harvest Red. Grapes are typically picked at night to maintain their acidity, then peeled and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Gnarly Head's signature wine, Old Vine Zinfandel, is handpicked from Kramer and Clay Station vineyards in Lodi, then peeled and gently pressed in stainless steel tanks for fermentation for about a week. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages in French and American oak.
