Tasting Notes and Characteristics:

Warm oak, roasted agave, and a whisper of smoke make El Tesoro Mundial Anejo Yamazaki Edition Tequila feel immediately luxurious in the glass, with layered notes of caramel, vanilla, baking spice, dried fruit, and subtle toasted wood shaping a smooth, contemplative sip. This añejo tequila from Mexico has an ABV of 40.00% and reflects the category’s classic character, crafted from agave and matured in oak for added depth and roundness. Its rich, savory-sweet profile pairs beautifully with grilled steak, where char and fat echo the oak and spice, or dark chocolate, which draws out its cocoa, caramel, and warm agave finish.

Producer Information: El Tesoro Tequila

El Tesoro Tequila comes from the highland town of Arandas in Jalisco, Mexico, where Don Felipe Camarena founded La Alteña distillery in 1937 and built a house style around ripe agave, mineral highland character, and traditional hands-on methods. The brand, meaning “the treasure,” reflects a production philosophy centered on estate-grown blue Weber agave, slow brick-oven cooking, tahona crushing, open fermentation, and distillation to proof without dilution, preserving the earthy sweetness and vivid agave texture of Los Altos tequila. El Tesoro is best known for its blanco, reposado, añejo, extra añejo, and special barrel-aged expressions, while La Alteña is also associated with other agave spirits shaped by the Camarena family’s deep roots in Jalisco tequila production.

Tequila: Origins, Flavor & Pairing Guide

Tequila is a distilled spirit made primarily from the blue agave plant (Agave tequilana), predominantly produced in the Jalisco region of Mexico, along with some areas in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. This unique spirit undergoes a meticulous distillation process, typically involving double distillation in pot stills or column stills. Tequila is categorized into several types based on its aging process: Blanco (unaged or aged less than 2 months), Reposado (aged between 2 months and 1 year), Añejo (aged between 1 and 3 years), and Extra Añejo (aged over 3 years). Each type offers distinct flavor profiles ranging from fresh and herbal to rich and complex.

The flavor and aroma of tequila vary significantly across its categories. Blanco tequilas are known for their crisp texture with fresh citrus notes, peppery hints, and agave sweetness. Reposado tequilas present a softer profile with vanilla and caramel undertones derived from oak aging. Añejo varieties boast richer flavors such as chocolate, coffee, and dried fruit alongside pronounced oak influence. Extra Añejo tequilas deliver complex layers of deep wood characteristics combined with smoothness. Tequila is versatile in cocktails; it serves as the base for popular drinks like Margaritas, Tequila Sunrises, Palomas, and various craft cocktails that highlight agave spirits.
