Discover Riesling Wines
Riesling is known for being one of the most fragrant white wine grape types found across the globe. When made as a single-varietal, late-ripening wine, it is at its most expressive. Given Riesling's capacity to effectively convey Terroir, many of the best producers choose to add the name of the specific vineyard from where the wine was produced.
Historically, notable Riesling wine locations and producers have produced a varietal wine that represents the region's climate and terroir. Wines with luscious green, tree fruit aromas supported by apple blossom and lime will be produced by premium cooler-climate winemakers producing off-dry or dry Riesling. Riesling from premium moderate-climate growers has more stone-fruit forward notes (think white peach) with hints of banana, mango, melon, and even pineapple tastes.
Germany, Austria, France, and Canada are among of the most well-known premium Riesling-producing nations. However, the Riesling grape variety has its origins in Germany, particularly in the Rhine area, as the name implies. Riesling was first mentioned in the mid-1400s, and only a few decades later, proof of its existence was discovered in Alsace, France, where some of the best Riesling is being produced today.
About the Producer: Weingut St Urbans-Hof
Weingut St. Urbans-Hof is a German wine producer based in the Moselle. The family estate was founded by Nikolaus Weiss in 1947 and has been managed since 1997 by third-generation family member Nick Weiss. The property has been part of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) since 2000 and is known for producing various types of products. Riesling wines from renowned vineyards including Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Leuvener Laurentiusley and Ockfener Bockstein. The estate's vineyards are located on steep slopes along the Moselle River in Laurentiusley, Goldtrepfchen and Mehringer, and along the Saar River in Bockstein and Saartinger. One of the best stretches of Sankt Urbans-Hof is in Goldtröpfchen, where the soils are some of the rockiest and most rocky of all 65 hectares (161 acres) of vineyards. The site is planted with ungrafted Riesling vines, planted over 100 years ago. The wines produced in this famous vineyard traditionally remain with a residual sweetness. Weingut St. Urbans-Hof is divided into two collections: white label and black label. A white label means the wine is dry and a black label means a fruity wine. White label wines include Gutsriesling Troken (the German word for "dry") and wines produced in the vineyards of Mehringer, Wiltinger, Saarfeilser and Laurentiuslay. The black label includes Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslez Riesling from the Bockstein and Goldtröpfchen vineyards, as well as Gutsriesling, the classic Moselle Riesling.
