About the Producer: Chateau Lyonnat

Château Lyonnat is the largest property of the Lussac Saint-Emilion appellation on Bordeaux's right bank. It produces three red wines based on the Merlot grape variety. The vineyard covers 50 hectares (124 acres) in one area. This includes a 20-hectare site on limestone soil with southern and southeastern exposure, very similar to the plateau in the Saint-Emilion area. In other areas, there are clay-limestone and silty soils. Soils are particularly cold and the area can be harvested two weeks after nearby Pomerol. As a result, the share of Merlot crops has increased to 90 percent over the years. The rest were taken by Cabernet Sauvignon and some Cabernet Franc. In the basement, the traditional concrete vats have been preserved against stainless steel. There are 72, with volumes ranging from 3,200 to 33,800 liters (845 to 8,929 net US gallons), each dedicated to a specific area. Wines Château Lyonnat's main wine can contain up to ten percent Cabernet Sauvignon. It is made from 32 hectares of vineyards located on the slopes of the estate. Aged in oak barrels with the addition of a third of new wood. About 140,000 bottles are produced annually. Château Lyonnat Émotion is a 100% Merlot cuvée made from old vines on a limestone plateau. He sees 18 months in a barrel. The "second" wine, Château La Rose Perruchon, is sourced from young vines on site. The corresponding annual production is 40,000 and 60,000 bottles. History The property originated as the property of the Cistercian Abbey of Fays. It was originally known as Léonat, from the Latin for "lion" and "birth", then Lionat, before assuming its present form. In 1720, after the abbot's death, the property was transferred to the tenants, the Drivet family. who have had it for generations. It was acquired by the current owners, the Milhade family, in 1961.
