The Prisoner Cabernet Sauvignon has rich flavors of blueberry, dark cherry, and chocolate, with aromas of freshly roasted coffee, black currant, vanilla bean, brown spice, and wild berries. This California red wine blends fruit from outstanding hillside vineyards in Napa Valley, and is inspired by the age-old process of propagating new vines using cuttings from beautiful places. The powerful flavor of cabernet sauvignon is combined with the structure of petite sirah and syrah, with a small amount of zinfandel added for complexity and spice, earning this red blend Best in Class at the 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This full-bodied cabernet sauvignon wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels and has a smooth finish that goes well with steak and vegetables, lamb, or a cheeseburger. One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.
Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District’s tart cherry flavors. The Prisoner Cabernet Sauvignon is a fantastic Cab Sav in a mid price range, highly recommended by the team here at Broadway Wine N Liquor.
The drinkable “mixed blacks” prepared by the Italian immigrants who first landed in Napa Valley inspired The Prisoner Wine Company’s namesake debut wine. Since its release, The Prisoner has earned cult status as one of the most inventive Napa Valley wines, spearheading the comeback of California red blends. The Prisoner Wine Company’s winemaking methodology hasn’t changed, and now includes a white mix (Blindfold), Chardonnay (The Snitch), Cabernet Sauvignon (Cuttings), Zinfandel (Saldo), Merlot (Thorn), and a Red Blend (Dérangé).
The Prisoner Wine Company sources grapes from over 100 vineyards across California’s finest grape-growing areas, collaborating with exceptional growers dedicated to cultivating rare types. Chrissy Wittmann and her winemaking team work with this family of growers throughout the year, visiting each vineyard site to analyze the style and quality of each lot in order to make the greatest wine possible from each vintage.
