Scotch Whiskey Varieties

Depending on the origin, Whisk (e) y comes in a wide variety of styles, from sweet American bourbon, caramel and vanilla to the single salty and peat-rich malt from Scotland. Although production methods vary widely, all whiskeys are made by distilling beer from a grain such as barley, corn, wheat or rye. After the distillation process is finished, the new pure alcohol is transferred to wooden barrels where it matures. This process can take up to thirty years or more.  Alexander Fleming, the Scottish inventor of penicillin, prescribed it as a cure for the common cold. Today, single malt Scottish whiskeys are appreciated by enthusiasts and aficionados around the world for their rarity, age and complexity. By definition, they must be produced in Scotland, in a single distillery, and made entirely from barley for malt in a distillation still. The appearance, aroma and taste of single malt Scotch whiskey can vary widely, depending on whether it was produced in the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Islay or Campbelltown regions.

About the Producer: Springbank Distillers

Springbank is one of only two remaining distilleries in the Campbeltown region of the Kintyre Peninsula in southwest Scotland. He produces single malt whiskey under three different labels in different styles; Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Springbank was founded in 1828 by Archibald and Hugh Mitchell, becoming the 14th licensed plant in Campeltown - in 1934 only Springbank and Glen Scotia remained. It remains the property of the founders' direct descendants. The distillery is the only one in Scotland to carry out all production operations locally, including the fermentation and bottling of traditional barley outdoors. This process control helps the distillery manage three different styles, each influenced by the choice of oak and the local climate. Springbank uses a mixture of air-dried peat and malt that is distilled two and a half times, compared with three times for Hazelburn and twice for Longmorn. Heavily impregnated versions are marketed under the Longrow brand. The first examples were distilled in 1973 as an attempt to prove that Islay-style single malt whiskeys could be produced on the mainland. The range now includes three expressions; Peat, red (aged 11 years and ready in barrels for port or red wine) and 18 years. Hazelburn has been bottled since 2005, triple distilled using only air-dried malt, and is available at age 10 and 12 years. version. The name refers to another Campbeltown distillery, formerly the city's largest, which operated from 1825 to 1925, with Mitchell & Co. as its owners since 1920. Also, in 2004, the parent company Springbank JA Mitchell & Sons reopened the Glengyle Distillery. and single malt whiskeys are produced under the Kilkerran brand. Independent bottle maker Cadenhead's is also part of the group.
