Producer Information: Silver Oak Cellars
Silver Oak Cellars, established in 1972 by Raymond Twomey Duncan and Justin Meyer in California’s Napa Valley, has built its legacy on a singular dedication to Cabernet Sauvignon. Rooted in the heart of Oakville and later expanding to Alexander Valley, Silver Oak’s philosophy centers on crafting age-worthy wines exclusively from Cabernet grapes, matured solely in American oak barrels—a distinctive choice that imparts a signature character unique to their bottlings. Their meticulous vineyard management across prime Northern California terroirs ensures consistency and depth vintage after vintage. Beyond their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from both Napa Valley and Alexander Valley estates, Silver Oak’s sister winery Twomey produces expressive Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc sourced from select sites across Sonoma County and Anderson Valley, further highlighting the family’s commitment to varietal excellence within California’s most celebrated wine regions.

Early Silver Oak wines—the winery's first vintage in 1972 produced a mere 1,100 cases—were often quite adventurous. Always exciting those vintages, over four decades ago were sometimes up and down, and far from the polished product that the wine is today. Over the past decade, these Napa Cabs have continued to garner attention, and have now become remarkably consistent. The 2013 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with the potential to be the winery's best ever, is seamless, rewarding, and a standout. At first sniff, this wine shows black fruit and cedar notes. With aeration, its aromatics blossom and springs forth with a delightful array of savory spices. Invite a few wine friends and pair this wine with a thick, rare slice of prime rib and enjoy the wine and food synergy. ((Tasted: January 17, 2018, San Francisco, CA USA)

Decanter
Big and bold, with sweet and spicy fruit flavours and a dark blackberry and chocolate nose, this wine has a long tannic finish. It’s likable and modern in style, not as sweet as in the past, and with less new oak aging, a definite plus. The long slow growing season resulted in wines that are concentrated and structured. This seems a return to the old style under Justin Meyer.

Wine Spectator
Shows off a distinctive dill and mocha edge, leading to a complex core of dark berry, licorice, loamy earth and cedar flavors. Ends with firm tannins and good length. Drink now through 2030.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a prominent red wine grape variety known for producing full-bodied wines with a rich flavor profile. Characterized by notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, it often features hints of green bell pepper, tobacco, and cedar. The wine typically exhibits dark fruit aromas complemented by herbal notes such as mint or eucalyptus, along with vanilla and spice from oak aging.
This varietal is primarily grown in renowned regions like Bordeaux in France, Napa Valley in the USA, Coonawarra in Australia, and the Chilean Central Valley. With its robust tannic structure and smooth finish, Cabernet Sauvignon pairs excellently with grilled meats like steak or lamb, hearty stews, aged cheeses, and even dark chocolate desserts. Its aging potential makes it a favorite for collectors and ideal for special occasions or formal dinners.
