Discover Tempranillo Wines

Tempranillo is a Spanish grape type that produces rich, full-bodied red wines with spicy and fruit driven flavors. Tempranillo is the most well-known grape variety in Spain, although it is most closely linked with the Rioja and Ribera del Duero wine regions.

With a low viscosity (in other words, the liquid isn't thick), Tempranillo has a strong and structured taste. When compared to other black wine types like Cabernet Sauvignon or Teinturier, Tempranillo grapes have somewhat thinner skins. The viscosity of the wine is mostly determined by the density of the skins during fermentation. So, if you prefer rich flavors without becoming syrupy, Tempranillo might be the wine for you!

Tempranillo thrives in areas that alternate between cold and hot throughout the growing season. It's a robust grape that can withstand high elevations and extended cold thanks to its fairly thick skin. This kind of climate may be found in Spain's Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Temperatures in these areas may range from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit at night. This vine has evolved over ages to cope with the changes and produce a wine with a strong taste. The rocky topography in these areas also gives Tempranillo wines a mineral flavor.

About the Producer: Bodegas Protos

Bodegas Protos is a Spanish wine cooperative that produces wines from the Ribera del Duero and Rueda appellations. It was originally founded in 1927 as Bodega Cooperativa de Peñafiel. Protos produces a variety of tempranillo red wines. A basic Roble spends six months in a barrel, while Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva wines are aged for the required number of months in a blend of American and French oak. The best Protos wine is the Selección Finca el Grajo Viejo, which is made from the only old vineyard in Ribera del Duero and has been in French oak for 18 months. Pinkish claret, or rosé, which is unusual for Ribera del Duero, is also on the list of labels, as is the organic Ecologico Tempranillo. Other Ribera del Duero labels include Protos '27, which commemorates the founding of the cooperative in 1927. , complete with a retro label and Aire de Protos, another pink, this time made by combining red and white varieties (the blend is dominated by tempranillo with 15% Garnacha and 15% Verdejo and Albillo. There were successive moves, including the enchantment of aging wines in barrels in the cellars on the hill under the castle of Peñafiel. Now, in addition to a modern cellar in the shadow of a medieval fortress, Protos it also has a separate winery in the southwestern Rueda region.Rueda produces several wines, mainly from special local Verdejo grapes: As with the basic Verdejo wine, Reserva is fermented in barrels, while the organic Verdejo is similar to the Verdejo grape , Tempranillo is produced in Peñafiel.
