Discover Blended Red Wine Wines

In the United States, a red mix is any American wine that isn't produced from a single grape type. It's an odd classification since many, if not all, red wines are and have always been mixes. A grand cru Bordeaux produced entirely of Cabernet, as well as Chiantis made entirely of Sangiovese, are the exception rather than the norm. In addition, California law only requires a wine's label to contain 75% of the grape type.

Winemakers combine grapes because it enables them to create a wine in a sense. A splash of Merlot may help soften Cabernet's tannins, while a dash of Syrah can give watery, inexpensive Pinot some punch. Blending is common in several regions: Rioja, for example, has traditionally blended Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha. Many modern, inexpensive red blends, on the other hand, are simply created for mass appeal—lots of superripe, black fruit and no acidity—using whatever varietals would suffice.

About the Producer: Chateau Teyssier

Château Teyssier is the Saint-Émilion headquarters of the JCP Maltus / SCEA Châtea Teyssier group, which has brands in Bordeaux and California. Founder Jonathan Malthus is also the owner and winemaker of the famous "garage" wine Le Dôme. Château Teyssier wine is typically a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, made from various locations located in the southwestern plains of Saint-Lord. The Emilion appellation, whose vineyards are located near Chateau Montbusquet. Soils are mostly sandy with few iron deposits. The grapes are harvested manually and chosen first by the bunches and then, after removing the peduncles, by the berries. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks after cold maceration; then the wines are aged in French oak barrels, a third of which are new. ) Before buying in 1998, it was known as Petit Mauvinon. In addition, Teissier vinifies four Grand Cru varieties from individual vineyards, of which Le Dôme is the most famous, being an early member of the garage movement in the 1990s, and one of the few then regularly challenging the main Cru Classé. Previously it was the site of the Vieux Chateau Mazerat, it is located close to the Château Angélus and is 80% Cabernet Franc and only 20% Merlot. Other red wines in the portfolio include Vieux Château Mazerat (the remainder of the property was acquired in 2008). , Les Asteries and Le Carré. Clos Nardian is Bordeaux Blanc Sec grown in low vineyards in Luguenac, south of the Dordogne River. It consists of about 40 percent of each Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon variety and 20 percent of Muscadel and is fermented in new oak barrels. The Bordeaux portfolio is complemented by Pezat Bordeaux Supérieur and Sauvignon Blanc reds. Meanwhile, Pézat rosé is made from grapes from Provence. In Napa Valley, Jonathan Malthus also produces a variety of wines (mostly Bordeaux reds) under the End of the World brand. For a time, wines were also produced in Australia's Barossa Valley region under the Colonial Estate label.
