Champagne is only allowed to be named Champagne if it is produced in the Champagne area in northern France. Chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier are used to make a classic Champagne or sparkling wine from the United States. The term "blanc de blancs" refers to a Champagne or sparkling wine composed entirely of chardonnay. If you see "blanc de noirs" on a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine from the United States, that means it's made entirely of pinot noir.

Louis Roederer is a champagne establishment in Reims best known for its flagship Cristal wine. The house, founded in the late 18th century, is still family owned, with an equal number of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a small amount of Pinot Meunier. Although the house was founded in 1776, it is now famous. it began in 1833, when Louis Roederer placed the reins in his uncle's hands and renamed the business for himself. Roderer intended to conquer foreign markets, mainly Russian ones; Röderer became the favorite wine of the Russian royal family. Crystal was created for the infamous paranoid Russian Tsar Alexander II, who called for the bottle to be transparent and flat-bottomed to avoid hidden explosives. Louis Roederer purchased several grand cru vineyards in Champagne in 1845 to add to his portfolio. This was unusual at the time, as most winemakers bought grapes rather than growing them themselves. Roderer had a better understanding of the intricacies of his vines and grapes and how best to use them; For Roderer, good wine depended on the soil and traditions of the house that created it. Today, Roderer vineyards cover nearly 240 hectares (600 acres) of land in Montagne de Reims, Valle de la Marne and Côte de Blanc. ... In 2012, about 25% of the vineyards were managed biodynamically. Roederer's portfolio includes vintage and non-vintage brut, rosé and blanc-de-blanc, and vintage crystal.
