Discover Lambrusco Wines

Lambrusco is the wild kid of Italian wines, and it's complex like most wild things. To begin with, its name is taken from ancient Roman and translates as "wild vine." It was given this name because of its capacity to grow everywhere and produce large harvests. However, the Romans gave the term Lambrusco to any grapevine that grew outside of planted vineyards, thus several types developed from "wild vines" were called Lambrusco. As a result, it is neither a single grape variety nor a family of grape varieties, but rather a generic name for a wide range of grapes. The numerous vines carrying the name Lambrusco are largely unrelated, and there are now 60 Lambrusco varieties recognized.

Fortunately, they share a lot of interests. Emilia, in central-eastern Italy, is where they all came from. They're all the same color. All of them are either frizzante or spumante. Most are mixes of different Lambrusco grapes with the Ancellotta grape to provide natural fruit sweetness and are designated secco – dry, amabile – somewhat sweet, or dolce – sweet.
