Discover Zinfandel Wines
Red Zinfandel is a grape varietal with black and blue skins that is mostly produced and consumed in the United States.
This grape tends to have lighter-bodied qualities in the glass while yet retaining strong notes. Zin has a strong acidic content and a traditionally high alcohol level, which contributes to this (up to 17 percent in some cases).
Because of these two characteristics, Zinfandel may have a medium body on the palate.
Raspberry, raisin, cherry, cassis, and plum are just a few of the rich red fruit tastes found in this grape type. Black pepper spice, tobacco, dry barnyard door, and coffee are often used to complement these jammy fruit tastes.
While these are the broad strokes, Zinfandel tastes may vary widely, and alcohol level is a significant factor.
Cooler temperature Zins are said to have more red fruit tastes, whereas warmer climate varietal wines have more black fruit and pepper subtleties, depending on maturity at harvest.
Over 70% of Zinfandel acreage is owned by the United States, with the rest held by Italy (approximately 27%) and different places across Australia, South Africa, and Mexico.
About the Producer: Frog's Leap
Frog's Leap, founded in 1981, is a premier winery in Rutherford, Napa Valley. It is especially famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and also produces one of California's most popular and serious Sauvignon Blanc wines. The property has 40 acres (16 hectares) of vineyards as well as 52 acres (21 hectares) on the Rossi estate. at Rutherford Bank. Frog's Leap also buys grapes from various leased lots and long-term leased vineyards. All vineyards owned by the property and partner producers have been organically grown since the late 1980s and many aspects of biodynamics have been implemented. Insect cover crops and curbs are used to promote biodiversity. Frog's Leap's flagship wine is Cabernet Sauvignon, now grown on the Rossi estate's vineyard and grown on the estate since 2012. Sauvignon Blanc is also made from the fruits of the Rutherford estate. while Chardonnay comes from the famous Truchard vineyard in Carneros. Zinfandel, which has a restrained style compared to many in the region, co-ferments with much of the Petit Sira, Carignan as well as some Waldiga. Rounding out the portfolio are Rutherford Merlot, Petite Sirah and the Provençal style La Grenouille Rougante Pink, founded by John Williams and Larry Turley in 1981 on the former site of a frog farm in Napa. The first edition was Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel, made with fruits purchased from Spottswood. Owner John Williams has also worked as an oenologist at Spring Mountain and has been fully dedicated to Frog's Leap since 1985. Williams became full owner in 1993 when Turley sold his stake to the foundation. Turley and Frog Leap wineries have moved to their current location in Rutherford.
