Producer Notes: Fortaleza Tequila
Fortaleza Tequila is a premium tequila producer based in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. The company was founded in 2005 by Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation member of the Sauza family, who has been producing tequila for over 140 years. Fortaleza Tequila is known for its traditional production methods, which involve using only the finest blue Weber agave plants, slow-cooking them in brick ovens, and crushing them with a tahona, a large stone wheel pulled by a mule. The resulting juice is then fermented in open-air wooden vats and distilled twice in copper pot stills.
Fortaleza Tequila offers a range of tequilas, including Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Still Strength. The Blanco is unaged and has a crisp, clean taste with notes of citrus and pepper. The Reposado is aged for 6-9 months in oak barrels, giving it a smooth, mellow flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel. The Añejo is aged for 2-3 years, resulting in a rich, complex flavor with notes of chocolate, coffee, and oak. The Still Strength is a high-proof tequila that is bottled straight from the still, giving it a bold, intense flavor.
In addition to its tequilas, Fortaleza also produces a range of other spirits, including a brandy and a rum. The brandy is made from the same blue Weber agave plants used to make the tequila, and is aged in oak barrels for up to 7 years. The rum is made from sugarcane grown in the state of Veracruz, and is aged in oak barrels for up to 7 years as well.
Fortaleza Tequila has won numerous awards for its tequilas, including several gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine and Spirits Competition. The company is committed to preserving the traditional methods of tequila production, and is known for its dedication to quality and authenticity.

Tequila is a distilled spirit made primarily from the blue agave plant (Agave tequilana), predominantly produced in the Jalisco region of Mexico, along with some areas in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. This unique spirit undergoes a meticulous distillation process, typically involving double distillation in pot stills or column stills. Tequila is categorized into several types based on its aging process: Blanco (unaged or aged less than 2 months), Reposado (aged between 2 months and 1 year), Añejo (aged between 1 and 3 years), and Extra Añejo (aged over 3 years). Each type offers distinct flavor profiles ranging from fresh and herbal to rich and complex.
The flavor and aroma of tequila vary significantly across its categories. Blanco tequilas are known for their crisp texture with fresh citrus notes, peppery hints, and agave sweetness. Reposado tequilas present a softer profile with vanilla and caramel undertones derived from oak aging. Añejo varieties boast richer flavors such as chocolate, coffee, and dried fruit alongside pronounced oak influence. Extra Añejo tequilas deliver complex layers of deep wood characteristics combined with smoothness. Tequila is versatile in cocktails; it serves as the base for popular drinks like Margaritas, Tequila Sunrises, Palomas, and various craft cocktails that highlight agave spirits.
