Discover Riesling Wines
Riesling is known for being one of the most fragrant white wine grape types found across the globe. When made as a single-varietal, late-ripening wine, it is at its most expressive. Given Riesling's capacity to effectively convey Terroir, many of the best producers choose to add the name of the specific vineyard from where the wine was produced.
Historically, notable Riesling wine locations and producers have produced a varietal wine that represents the region's climate and terroir. Wines with luscious green, tree fruit aromas supported by apple blossom and lime will be produced by premium cooler-climate winemakers producing off-dry or dry Riesling. Riesling from premium moderate-climate growers has more stone-fruit forward notes (think white peach) with hints of banana, mango, melon, and even pineapple tastes.
Germany, Austria, France, and Canada are among of the most well-known premium Riesling-producing nations. However, the Riesling grape variety has its origins in Germany, particularly in the Rhine area, as the name implies. Riesling was first mentioned in the mid-1400s, and only a few decades later, proof of its existence was discovered in Alsace, France, where some of the best Riesling is being produced today.
About the Producer: Weingut Dr. Loosen
Dr. Loosen is a wine producer on the outskirts of Bernkastel in the Moselle region of Germany. Headed by wine personality Ernst "Ernie" Loosen, the company is easily one of the most famous Riesling producers in Germany, and has won numerous awards for many of its wines, from the widely sold Dr. L. Riesling up. Ernie Loosen, who has posted since 1988, was the magazine's DECANTER Man of the Year in 2005 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential winemakers in the world. The estate has six main vineyards, all designated as Erste Lage in 1868 by the Prussian classification of Moselle vineyards. This includes famous names like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Erdener Prälat and Graacher Himmelreich, and wines from these places are touted like vineyard labels. In addition to rich shale minerals and volcanic soils and classic, long, cool summers, these rocky vineyards also have old, ungrafted vines, including some that are over 120 years old. Loosen produces a wide range of styles, from Botrytis-free dry Riesling to rich, lush wines. Dry Rieslings are made from fruits that have been ripe for a long time, allowing the development of aromas and softening the acidity. These wines are aged in large oak barrels using local yeast with at least 12 months on lees. The best many of the Erste Lage vineyards are bottled as a vineyard of wines with the proper maturation level: Cabinetta and Spätlese for non-Botrytis wines; Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese for different sweetness levels of wines affected by Botrytis. Eiswein is also produced when conditions permit. The estate's generic wines come from a select group of long-term contract producers whose vineyards are on steep slopes with tiled soil. In addition to the introductory Dr. L, the property also produces red slate cubes and fruity blue slate cubes. Total production is around 70,000 bottles per year, which makes Dr. Loosen one of the biggest players in the Mosel region. The company also produces red and white wines in Germany's Palatinate region under the Villa Wolf brand. Other companies include Eroica Riesling in Washington State with Chateau Ste. Michelle and J. Christopher Wine in Oregon.
