Weingut Dönnhoff is a property in the Nahe region of the Rhineland. He is often considered one of the best producers in Germany, known for the high quality of his wines, which are mainly made from Riesling. The wine portfolio includes wines from selected vineyards and wines from the estate, approximately 10,000 cases from each vintage. Dönnhoff is one of three German states to receive the Robert Parker 100 point mark for Riesling Eiswein vintages in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2010. The property is located in Oberhausen, in the center of Riesling, in the district of Nahe. There are approximately 20 hectares (50 acres) of vineyards, a large part of which is owned by Erste Lage. About 80% of the production is made from Riesling grapes, grown in volcanic rocky soils, which give the wines a balanced acidity and intense minerality. The rest of Dönnoff's vineyards are dedicated to Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. They are planted in clayier, less rocky soils that hold more water during the summer. Winemaking in Dönnhoff is simple. After pressing all the bundles, decantation follows for 10-18 hours, fermenting in stainless steel barrels or tanks. After aging on the lees, the wines are filtered in March after harvest and bottled after a few months. The Dönnoff family has been producing wine in this region since the 1750s. However, since Helmut Dönnoff came to power in 1971, the estate has gradually grown from 4 hectares (10 acres) to its current size. His reputation grew to similar proportions. Robert Parker called Hellmuth a "superstar" and British writer Hugh Johnson "fanatically committed to quality and a remarkable natural talent for winemaking."
