Rum Varieties

From the pirate life on the high seas to the paradise islands of the Caribbean, perhaps no other spirit evokes a story as romantic as Rum. Produced by the fermentation and distillation of molasses or freshly squeezed sugarcane juice, cachaça has an alcoholic content of 20% to more than 70% and comes in a range of shades from light to dark. The highest quality rum is normally produced in distillation stills and aged in wood, while the cheapest clear or "white" rum is produced in distillation stills and bottled without aging in barrels. Naturally, rum is the basis for tropical cocktails like Dakiri and Mojito.

About the Producer: Ron Diplomatico - Botucal

Ron Diplomático is a rum produced in La Miela, Venezuela. It is distributed in over 50 countries under the Protected Designation of Origin (DOC) "Ron de Venezuela". In some markets, the alternative Botucal brand is used. This name comes from the name of one of the sugar cane farms; "Botuka" is a local word meaning "green hill". The Diplomático distillery is located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, close to the main sugar factories and close to the clean, quality water of the Terepaima National Park. Ron Diplomático is made with cane molasses or cane honey, depending on the style of cachaça. The plant's cultivated yeast strain converts these sugars into alcohol, which is then distilled. Light rum is distilled in a still, medium rum is distilled in a kettle, and complex rum is distilled in a still. Diplomatic rum is aged mainly in barrels of malt whiskey and old bourbon, but Pedro Jimenez and Oloroso sherry barrels use sherry barrels. Aging of the Prestige Diplomatic range, including Rums Single Vintage and Ambassador. Full barrels are not moved or opened until they have reached optimal maturity and are ready to be mixed by the distillery's Maestro Ronero. Ron Diplomatico's traditional portfolio combines well-established Hispanic, American and British distillation methods. The traditional range includes Reserva, Blanco Reserva and Reserva Exclusive. The "Diplomatico" distillery was founded in 1959 by Licorerías Unidas, with the multinational Seagram as its main shareholder. Since 2002, the business has been owned by Destilerías Unidas SA (DUSA: a private company, 100% owned by Venezuela).
