Discover Blended Red Wine Wines
In the United States, a red mix is any American wine that isn't produced from a single grape type. It's an odd classification since many, if not all, red wines are and have always been mixes. A grand cru Bordeaux produced entirely of Cabernet, as well as Chiantis made entirely of Sangiovese, are the exception rather than the norm. In addition, California law only requires a wine's label to contain 75% of the grape type.
Winemakers combine grapes because it enables them to create a wine in a sense. A splash of Merlot may help soften Cabernet's tannins, while a dash of Syrah can give watery, inexpensive Pinot some punch. Blending is common in several regions: Rioja, for example, has traditionally blended Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha. Many modern, inexpensive red blends, on the other hand, are simply created for mass appeal—lots of superripe, black fruit and no acidity—using whatever varietals would suffice.

About the Producer: Cono Sur
Viña Kono Sur is a wine producer based in the Colchagua Valley, Chile. It is particularly notable for its Pinot Noir wines, in particular the flagship Osio, but it produces a range of wines from many of Chile's top grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere and Chardonnay. The brand was created in 1993 when Concha I Toro acquired the Santa Eliza property in Chimbarongo, Colchagua. The property had about 300 hectares (494 acres) of vineyards, including an area with Pinot Noir vineyards, which average 25 years old. Since then, ownership has grown significantly and Kono Sur now produces wines in most of Chile's major wine regions. including the Maipo Valley, Limari Valley and Aconcagua. However, the most important region of Cono Sur is probably the Casablanca Valley, where Pinot Noir grapes are grown for Osio wine. The grapes are planted in sandy clay soils and enjoy the cool maritime climate, maintaining the acidity and developing a rich varietal character. After manual harvesting, selection and grinding, the grapes are fermented and aged in barrels for 12-14 months. ... After that, the wine is kept in stainless steel tanks for 4 to 8 weeks before being bottled and released. There are several other ranges in Cono Sur, including the entry-level Bicycle line and the more premium 20 Barrels and Special Reserve series.
