Discover Merlot Wines

Merlot is a black and blue grape varietal that produces dry red wine with a softer, medium to full body. It is the most commonly planted and popular red wine grape variety in France's Bordeaux region, as well as the second most widely planted and popular red wine grape variety in the United States.

Merlot grapes, which are traditionally vinified to produce a dry red wine, may have a wide range of flavors depending on the environment in which they are cultivated. Merlot will be used in both red wine blends and single varietal wines in several wine areas known for producing the grape.

Merlot, like Cabernet Sauvignon, has a similar taste profile and belongs to the same grape family (a descendant of Cabernet Franc). Merlot differs from Cabernet Sauvignon in that it has a thinner skin and is less astringent owing to fewer and softer tannins. It also has a fruitier, and sometimes less complicated, body.

While the taste of Merlot varies according on the environment in which it is produced, it usually has overtones of juicy blue, black, and red fruit. Undertones of coco, vanilla, and other earth tones frequently accompany these taste sensations.

About the Producer: Benziger Family Winery

Benziger Family Winery is a wine producer located in Sonoma Mountain, Ava. The property was purchased by Mike and Bruno Benziger in 1980 and is best known for its eco-friendly growing methods - all wines in the portfolio are third party certified organic, organic or biodynamic. Benziger produces wines from a variety of classic California varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The property covers 14 hectares (35 acres) of vineyards on volcanic, loamy and loamy soils. The vineyards are grown in dry conditions and are planted with five red varieties Bordeaux, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. Mike Benziger began converting ownership from conventional to biodynamic farming in the 1990s and launched the first certified biodynamic wine, the premier Bordeaux blend Tribute, in 2001. The Benziger Family Winery's wine portfolio consists of a variety of varietal wines and blends. It includes a number of Signaterra, Manor and Coelo appellations, which originate from properties on the coast of Sonoma. Benziger owns or has long-term vineyard leases in many AVAs throughout Sonoma County, including Sonoma Valley, Russian River Valley, Pine Mountain Cloverdale and Karneros. The winery was owned by the family until 2015, when it was sold to The Wine Group.
