Late in the 18th century, Master Distiller Basil Hayden Sr. moved his family and his reputation from Maryland to Kentucky in search of “greener pastures.” According to mythology, Basil set out to brew a batch of bourbon using only the ingredients he had on hand, not knowing what the old guard’s “rules” of bourbon would have thought of his mash. The end result was a bourbon with an unusually high rye content that combined the rye’s peppery undertones with corn’s sweetness. The neighbors who gave it a try weren’t upset, even though the purists might have been.
